Consider this permanent solution for areola and nipple reconstruction. Emily can create a soft and hyper-realistic tattoo that is an unmatched option for restoration.
-Does it hurt?
Typically there is very little tactile sensation after having a mastectomy, therefore most clients don't need numbing cream. However, if a client does still have feeling in the area, then Emily uses two different numbing creams to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
-Is it covered by insurance?
Yes, your areola tattoo is part of your reconstruction! You will be provided the correct codes so that your insurance will reimburse the cost of this procedure. Therefore, you will have to pay out-of-pocket upfront as Emily does not currently bill insurance companies directly.
-How long does it take?
It takes 2-3 sessions over the course of 1-2 months to build color to perfection. The first appointment takes about 2.5 hours and touch ups take an hour.
-How soon can I have this done?
We must wait at least 6 months from the end of your treatment to allow your body to heal and recover. It is important to let your body rebuild it's immune system and soften any scars before we do this procedure.
-How long does it last?
This procedure is permanent, however you may need touch ups or color boosts in 5-10 years.
-Can you tattoo a reconstructed nipple?
Yes, however it is easier to tattoo a flat surface. A flat surface allows for better penetration of the pigment as it's easier to stretch and manipulate. If you haven't had your reconstruction yet and you know you'd like the 3-d areola tattoo, consider leaving a flat surface for your artist.
-What is the healing process like?
Immediately after your tattoo is done, the skin might be tender and sensitive. Emily will give you an aftercare kit with products and instructions to help the tattoo heal as well as possible. At first, the color will appear dark and bold. Over 5 days the area will peel slightly and reveal a softer pigmented tattoo. We ask that you refrain from sweating, long steamy showers, or soaps and lotions other than the ones provided while the tattoo is healing.
-Do I need a consultation?
Yes, Emily needs to ensure that you are a good candidate for this procedure. She is happy to do phone consultations for everyone's convenience.
